Ein Rafa Mosque Tiyul

On the Islam tiyul, we learned about the history of Islam, as well as the modern issues and
philosophies surrounding it. Islam is a monotheistic religion that believes in one god, Allah,
and Muhammed is his prophet. It is the world’s second-largest religion, the followers of which
are known as Muslims. The primary scripture of the religion of Islam is the Quran. How does this
relate to us, the Jewish People? Well, Muslims consider Jews and Christians people of the book,
which is an elevated status from other religions, but still below them. The reason that they don’t
follow the Tanakh or New Testament is because they believe they were corrupted by human
interference.

We visited a mosque in Ein Rafa and met a woman who converted to Islam, named Yasmine.
We got to ask her questions in a very open setting. In the mosque, we separated the men and
women, and made sure to take off our shoes and enter stepping in with our right foot. The women
also covered their heads. By keeping all of these traditions, we were able to experience a mosque
how the local practicing Muslims do. Yasmine explained to us how most Muslims practice.
For example, they pray 5 times a day. This practice comes from the belief that Muhammad
ascended to heaven at the Dome of the Rock, and he negotiated the number of times they
are required to pray down from 50 to 5. In addition, she explained the belief that men should
never walk behind a woman so that she feels safe, like she won’t be attacked. She believes
that although on the surface many practices seem antifeminist, but they are more practical rules
than rules to reinforce the superiority of men. For example, women sit behind men so that men
aren’t distracted, not because the women are “behind” men or inferior.

What do you think about these practices? Do you agree that they are only for practical
reasons or are they to reinforce an inferior position for the women in society?

There are also many stereotypes about the connection between Islam and radicalism or terrorism.
In the discussion, we discussed how for the majority of Muslims, they don’t agree with or support
any of these radical or violent actions. Do you think that people are able to separate the
peaceful practice of Islam and the use of Islam as a reason for violence? Why is it difficult
to separate these groups?

One final ideal we learned about is that the only requirement to convert to Islam is to pronounce
your acceptance of Allah as the one true God and Muhammed as his only final prophet. It is
not about practice or ceremony, but about personal belief. Do you think it is a good thing
that Islam is so easy to convert into? What was the most interesting thing you learned
on the tiyul?

Choose two or three of the above questions to answer in the comments.

  1. I think that the easy conversion into Islam isn't necessarily a good thing, but my opinion is from an outside perspective. If it is so easy to covert into a religion, the religion stops being about small communities, but about the religion as a whole. From the perspective of a Muslim, I can understand why they wish to have easy conversion; it is so that the religion grows and becomes even more popular. The most interesting thing I learned on the tiyul was how the times of prayer are super precise and how they change based on the time of the year.

  2. I think the practices of covering the women and having them walk behind the men are to reinforce the inferior position of women in society. One can look at it from a feminist perspective and an anti-feminist perspective. It seems as if Yasmine had been told to have that mindset that it was actually good what the Muslim women were told what to do. I mean, who would do something that they thought they were being belittled for? The most interesting thing I learned on the tiyul was how the Islam faith believe everyone is born a Muslim and if they convert to Islam, they are actually just reverting to Islam.

  3. I think that people can separate peaceful practice from violent practice of Islam if they are educated, most people only associate Islam with terrorism because they are ignorant to the practices of the religion. I think that it is difficult to separates the two because all we hear in the new is the bad part and none of the peaceful and true to the Quran practice

  4. I personally don't agree with those practices because it's a part of human nature. Men and women are supposed to have special bonds. I think in some way it's practical but that practicality has become diluted over the centuries.I believe people should be less oblivious to the fact that only a minuscule number of Muslims are violent just like extremists in America. However, even though I would love to have a transparent view of every Muslim I see, I can't because of what actions have been committed in the past. I think it's a good thing that the conversion process is easy. This is because if someone believes in a theology or religion he or she should be able to choose it easily. The most interesting thing I learned on the tiyul was that the founders of Ein Rafa are from Tzuba.

  6. I think that while it should be able to separate the peaceful practice of Islam and the violent use of Islam, it is a hard thing to do without education on the topic. The news only tends to show negative things and so people aren't shown the beauty and peace of the religion and the people practicing it. It is hard to separate these groups because a lot people don't know any better due to all of the stereotypes.

  7. I believe that most people have a problem with separating Islam as a peaceful religion and as a means for violence. I believe that this is because of the news and social media over exaggerating everything, and peoples lack of knowledge on Islam.

  8. I think that it is possible for people to be able to separate Islam as a peaceful practice and the use of Islam as a reason of violence, but I do not feel like that it will happen... at least, not for a very long time because from my from American perspective, it can be difficult to separate the two because there is already this fear and prejudice towards the Muslims because of all the terror attacks reported on the news, and there are little to no Mosques in America making it hard for the general public to recognize that there are peaceful practicing Muslims living nearby. Is it possible to separate the two ideas? Yes, but will it happen? It will take a lot of time.
