Yam l’Yam

Our Yam l’Yam trip was a 5 day test of endurance as we hiked from the Kinneret to the Mediterranean Sea. We had to make our own breakfast and lunch with the food and supplies we carried in our backpacks, and we had to learn to navigate ourselves with maps. At night, we all slept on mats and in sleeping bags under the stars. The first night, we had an activity where we sat in nature and meditated or simply looked at the moon for about 30 minutes. It was amazing to be in nature for such a long period of time, but it also had its challenges. For example, climbing Mt. Meron was physically difficult, and we had to adapt to not showering for 5 days. Which part was most difficult for you and what was your favorite part?
Especially because we were hiking and eating in subgroups for part of the time, we were all able to bond with people we weren’t as close with. Some of the things we learned on the trip were to navigate with a map and identify elevation markings, river banks, and roads/trails. We also learned how to cook porridge, rice, sausage and inventive meals without a lot of supplies. Groups were able to chop vegetables, cut meat, and cook meals which cultivated in a Master Chef Competition. Not to mention, we learned how to make bonfires, as well. All in all, we learned a lot of skills, improved our teamwork, and got more in touch with nature. Was Yam l’Yam overall a positive experience despite the difficulties and why?

  1. Yes, absolutely. Yam l'Yam allowed many individuals to overcome a very difficult task. This in itself is huge for spirit building and believing in yourself. This is not a trip for everyone. Many people would be unable to complete it. Because each and every one of us did, we can all look back and say we completed this hard task despite the challenges. Also, because we were forced to work together to succeed, it brought us closer as a group. Overall, this was positive because of what it did for us as individuals.

  3. Although yam l’ yam was very challenging for me, overall I would say it was a positive experience. I think it was something that I will never forget because of everything we went through and had to overcome as a group. Cooking and navigating and camping together as well as being surrounded by each other 24/7 really forced us to grow as a community and I am thankful for the experience.

  5. The most difficult part to me was making all the food. The most exciting part was the beach on the last day. Yam L Yam was a positive experience. It gave me an appreciation for hard work and nature. I also found a lot of it to be fun.

  6. I believe that yam l yam was a positive experience because of the challenges rather than in spite of them. It allowed us to get closer to nature and each other

  9. Yam l yam was definitely an overall positive experience for me. I had the ability to get closer to people that I did not know that well previously and strengthen my relationships with my friends. My favorite part was falling asleep looking at the stars and waking up to the sunrise. There will inevitable be difficulties if you put 28 teenagers outside without tents but I believe that as a group we only got stronger. I loved yam l yam so much that im ready for part two!

  10. Yam l'yam was a really great experience for me. I really enjoyed getting closer to the people around me. The most difficult part for me was just pushing through each day no matter what the situation was, especially when I hurt my leg. (: I think I did really good on yam l'yam and I was very proud of myself for completing it.

  11. Without a doubt, my favorite part of yam l' yam was the bike ride. The combination of adrenaline, joy, and wind was euphoric. On the other hand, the most difficult part of yam l' yam was sleeping in nature, without a tent or anything covering us. It was hard to fall asleep the first few nights, but eventually I was able to. This challenge was one of many that I had to overcome, and the feeling of completion truly made this tiyul a very positive experience for me.

  12. Yam L’yam was without a doubt a great experience. I really got to bond with a lot of people during that time and completely cutting off the grid for a week was very surreal and really showed me my dependence on my phone. My favorite part was the end of the bike ride because at that moment, I realized I could finally use a real toilet again.
